I describe myself as a cross-disciplinary curiosity quencher who takes the mantra “never stop learning” very seriously. When something interests me, I go all in, which I guess is how I ended up in the part-time coding bootcamp at TTS New Orleans.
During the daytime I work as the Online Editor for a company called Hoffman Media, which I consider the coolest job ever. Before transitioning into this role, I worked as an Assistant Editor for a Hoffman title called Louisiana Cookin’ magazine.
In my two years at the company, I’ve learned more about the digital world than I could have previously imagined. I never considered myself a “numbers person” until I realized how much I enjoyed the instantaneous feedback that web analytics offer. My interest in coding grew naturally out of my desire to help make our team’s web presence the best it could possibly be.
My goal for entering the TTS program was to understand the web development process so that I could better communicate with the rest of the digital team, and that has certainly been the outcome thus far. We are halfway through the program and I am so excited about the possibility of being able to contribute to the development of future websites, even if it’s only through ideas, now that I know how to code.
If you’re reading this, you’re probably wondering if the part time program at TTS is for you. I, like many of the other blog contributors, will say that I have learned more in the past 4 weeks than I would’ve learned in 6 months or a year of trying to teach myself. It also helps to have classmates and a teacher to consult with when I run into the inevitable hiccups that come with learning a new skill.
The team at TTS has been incredibly supportive and the New Orleans tech community couldn’t be more welcoming. Lindsay, our New Orleans Community Organizer, keeps us up to date on all the latest tech happenings in the city and invites local tech industry leaders to speak to us about different opportunities.
The best part about TTS is that once you start classes, you are a member of a community. You are always invited to ask questions, attend events, and even to attend future classes to refresh your memory about certain skills.
Overall, the part time class is a big commitment in addition to working full-time, but it’s definitely doable. And the payoff? So worth it.
